Giants Practice today and Monday
by posted 02/08/2020

Quick reminder that we have our first Giants practice today at Encinal at 10:30-12 and our second practice will be Monday at Encinal from 4-5:30.

Please plan on having parents sticking around for a bit on Monday after practice to go over additional information as well as have a chance to ask coaches questions.  I have another practice at 12:30 today, so I will be unable to have a long Q and A after today's practice.

Thanks very much, I am super excited to get this season going!

No Giants Practice on Monday, First Practice Next Saturday!
by posted 02/02/2020

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

I wanted to send out a quick clarifying email to my Giants families regarding our first practice, which will be held next Saturday, February 8th at 10:30 at Encinal.  We do not have practice scheduled tomorrow due to coach conflicts.  The League website sent you all an email atomically before I could take tomorrow’s practice off the schedule.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next Monday and please plan to have parents stick around for 10-15 minutes afterwards for a little chat.

GO NINERS!!

Welcome to the Giants!!!
by posted 01/29/2020

Parents,

We’re finally ready to kick off the 2020 Menlo Atherton Little League Machine Pitch Season!!  We just finished the draft this evening and as the title of the email suggests, your son was selected to join our squad, the Giants.  For those who don’t know me, my name is Tony Arata and my son, Johnny, is on the team and I’ll be serving as Head Coach/Manager.   I am also a member of the M-A Little League Board and Commissioner of Fall Ball, as well as Umpire Coordinator for the league.  I’ve been coaching in the M-A Little League for 5 years and will also be Managing my older sons team in the Minors Division.  I played in the M-A Little League as a child and have very fond memories of my time on the diamond and it’s great to be back in a coaching capacity.  I’ve had the pleasure of coaching a number of the children on our team in prior baseball seasons and I’m looking forward to meeting and coaching those who I have not yet worked with.  I wanted to send this initial team email to touch base and provide a few initial details and information regarding the upcoming season.

First off, here is our team roster:

  • Johnny Arata
  • Connor Rosenthal
  • Matthew Badawi
  • William Danielewicz
  • Adrian Herzick
  • Benny Hopman
  • Matteo Mauro
  • PJ McGaraghan
  • Louis Smith
  • Carter Hellman
  • Tucker Hellman

Hopefully each of you will recognize some names on the list, but even if not, we’ll make sure all the children feel right at home on the Giants!

Game Info:

I wanted to touch base generally on game/practice times and locations and the start of the season.  The regular season game schedule will be uploaded to our team page on the M-ALL website at https://www.leagueathletics.com/Schedule.asp?org=m-all.org.  The regular season kicks off on March 7th with our wonderful Opening Day Ceremony.  We will generally have 2 games per week, with one game on a Wednesday or Thursday and a second game on Saturday.  Games will be played at Las Lomitas and Encinal schools.

Practice Info:

As for practices, we have two different periods of time for our slotted practice days/times.  During the pre-season (i.e., all days before Saturday, March 7th), we will have scheduled practices on Saturday from 10:30-12:00pm and also Monday afternoon from 4:00-5:30pm.  During the regular season (i.e., all days after March 7th), our practice day/time switches to just Monday from 4:00-5:30pm.  All practices will be held at Encinal.  Thus, during the preseason (about a 4 week period), we’ll have 2 practices per week and during the regular season we’ll only have 1 practice per week (given that we’ll have 2 games each week as well).  I also have a batting cage (and pitching machine) at my house, so I will be able to host hitting clinics on off days when kids are available and interested in additional time at the plate and in front of the machine.

If for any reason the practice schedule is overly problematic, please let me know ASAP and, as a general matter, if your child cannot make any particular game/practice, please do let me know so that I can be aware of that in advance.  You can go on our team web page to indicate for any game/practice whether your son plans to come or not and we ask that you try to do that as much as possible as it is tremendously helpful for us to know of game/practice absences well in advance for planning and lineup purposes.

I’d like to start the pre-season practice schedule next Saturday, February 7th from 10:30-12pm at Encinal  Our league website actually already has the practices loaded on our master schedule (along with our games), so you can look there to coordinate your calendars.  As much as I would like to get started this weekend or on Monday, there are several conflicts as basketball winds down, and some previously scheduled travel plans for coaches.

Coach Information:

In addition to myself, the coaching duties will be handled by assistant coaches Mike Rosenthal and Brian Danielewicz.  Mike and I led the Giants to winning the Machine Pitch Championship last year and we hope to repeat!  Brian coaches my older son in basketball, so he’s got the chops to get the kids sharp and keep them involved.  If anyone else would like to serve as an assistant coach or just help out a practices, please let me know.  The more coaches we have, the the better experience we can provide to the players.

Parent Volunteer Roles:

Other important volunteer jobs for parents are: Team Parent (who would help organize snacks, volunteer duties, team photographer, assistance with team website, etc.) PCA Parent (Positive Coaching Alliance, keeps order on the field and ensures a safe and positive experience for players) and Field Crew (set up the field when we are home team, clean up afterwards when we are visiting team). Lindy Hopman, Bennys mom, has volunteered to be our Team Parent, so that role is filled, but I still need help with the PCA Parent and Field Crew.  I would love to fill these important jobs as soon as possible, so if you are interested in any of these jobs or if you already signed up for them when registering, please let me know!

Team and Parent Meeting:

I will plan to hold a full team meeting (including parents) right after our first practice on Saturday, February 7th, so please stick around after that practice for 10-15 minutes.  The coaches will introduce themselves and I’ll give a run down on our expectations/plan for the season, talk about player equipment, discuss tips for parents throughout the season and league rules as well as give you all a chance to ask questions.

Equipment:

A quick word about equipment:  We will hand out our team uniforms as soon as we get them in, which will include 1 jersey, 1 hat, 1 pair of baseball socks and 1 belt.  Please note that you will be required to purchase baseball pants for your player, as the league does not provide these.  We ask that you please purchase WHITE colored pants, which you can pick up at Goetz Brothers, Big 5 or other sporting goods stores.  You will also need to provide cleats and baseball glove for your player, but bats, balls and other equipment are not necessary (but note that if your player does bring them to practice, they will be responsible for keeping track of this personal gear).  Catchers gear is also provided by the league.   All players are also required to wear an athletic cup.

Safety:

Please also let me know if your child has any particular health concerns that we coaches should be aware of in advance (e.g., allergies, asthma, etc.).

Team Communications:

As I mentioned above, our official league-sponsored team website can be found at the M-ALL website.  We have a team-specific page that is a great place to get details re: the game/practice schedule, the full roster of boys (plus parent contact information), better details re: league rules, etc.  There is also an app that you can download to link to our website off of your phones which is also available at the website.  You will also receive emails from me as I update the team page and add bulletins and other important information.  Our page can be found at:  https://www.leagueathletics.com/Bulletins.asp?MyTeam=880875&org=m-all.org

Expectations for the season:

I just wanted to let you know about what to expect for this season in terms of coaching focus and player development.  At this now more developed stage in their baseball lives, while we will continue to focus on perfecting the baseball “basics” for each child, more will be expected of them in terms of focus, preparation and hard work (both at practice and outside our games/practices).  The introduction of the pitching machine this year to our younger team members adds a new and difficult, but exciting and challenging element for the kids, but it is one we will prepare them well for and get them comfortable with.  Lots of new things to learn and get better at and become more “advanced” ballplayers.  Obviously our primary goal is to make playing baseball the most fun athletic experience they’ll have all year, but we’ll do so by teaching the kids more and expecting more from them as teammates and ballplayers.  Individualized instruction will give us a chance to make sure the kids receive “right sized” coaching.  Should you have any questions or concerns as we start the season (or during the season), please feel free to contact me or any of the other coaches any time.

Thanks to you all in advance for a great season!  We’re going have a blast!

GO GIANTS!!

Best,

Coach Tony
