Hello Yard Goats Families,

Things are looking good for the team!  We have been having some great practice sessions and played very well in the scrimmage on Sunday.  I am really looking forward to Opening Day on Saturday!

Regarding Opening Day:  Please have your child at Burgess by 8:45 in full uniform.  We will have the ceremony, which is a lot of fun, and then make our way over the HP for our first game at 11am.

We also have one last practice session this week before our game at Farm Club Baseball.  Please be at the facility from 6:30-7:30 for batting practice in the cages.  Farm Club is located within Redwood Junction off of Middlefield in Redwood City, right where the train tracks cross Middlefield.  Unit F is near the back of the complex.

Hello Yard Goats families,

I need to fill two critical parent spots for the Yard Goats.  Two parents have stepped up and volunteered to help out as Team Parent and Statistician, but I need a volunteer for PCA Parent and someone to help with Field Crew duties.

Team Parent: Alex Arguello

Statistician:  Tomas Jaramillo (also working as assistant coach)
PCA Parent:
Field Crew:

Regarding PCA Parent role:

PCA Parent Meeting (Encinal Library)
  • Thursday February 27th 7pm-7:30pm
  • Tuesday March 2nd 7pm-7:30pm
  • Your team PCA Parent must attend one of these sessions.
Field Crew does field set up for home games, and take down of away games.

Additionally, I have a great team of coaches helping out: Matty Foley, Jay Benkis, Brian Coleman, Tomas Jaramillo and Alan Waxman.

Thanks to you all for the continued support of the Yard Goats!

Winter Break Yard Goats Practice Schedule Update
by posted 02/12/2020

Hello Yard Goats Familes,

Due to a prior conflict, practice this Sunday for the Yard Goats will be ending at 1:45, as opposed to 2pm.

Also, I know that several team members will be out of town for winter break this coming weekend and next, but we will still be having our regular practices on both Saturday and Sunday for the next two weeks (and beyond).  If you are in town, we will see you out there!

Thank you,

Summer Baseball Camp -- Legends
by posted 02/12/2020

Hello Yard Goats!

Teague is going to be doing 2 weeks of Legends Baseball Camp this summer (July 13-17, and July 27-31) and would LOVE to know if anyone from the team wanted to join him-- early bird camp sign-up end tomorrow, so I wanted to get a note out to the team to share this program and see if anyone was interested.  My son, Augie, did two weeks last summer and really enjoyed it.

Cheers,

Snack Sign-up for the Yard Goats
by posted 02/12/2020

Hello Yard Goats families,

Our team mom, Alex Arguello, has created an after game snack sign up sheet for our team.  You can find it here:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12qA5aSSDhRF3x4qTI2i3OBCYYSZbD3s7ztbmC1ptTZQ/edit?usp=sharing

For evening games during the week, we had a lot of fun last year with team dinners after the games.  Some parents brought pizza or other dinners so that we did not all have to rush home after the games and prepare something for our families.

Thanks very much,

Yard Goats Practice today and Sunday!
by posted 02/08/2020

Quick reminder that we have our first Yard Goats practice today at HP at 12:30-2, and our second practice will be tomorrow from 12:30-2 at HP.  Please plan on having parents sticking around for a bit today after practice to go over additional information as well as have a chance to ask coaches questions.

This will be our practice schedule for the next month until the season starts, then we switch to just Sunday for practice, as we will have games scheduled on Saturday and during the week.

Thanks very much, I am super excited to get this season going!

Correction! Yard Goats Practice Info Updated!
by posted 01/29/2020

Correction!  Yard Goats Practice Info Updated!

I mistakenly indicated that our regular season practice sessions will be on Sunday from 12:30-2pm.  The correct time is Sunday from 11am-12:30 starting on March 8th through the end of the season.

Practice Info:

As for practices, we have two different periods of time for our slotted practice days/times.  During the pre-season (i.e., all days before Saturday, March 7th), we will have scheduled practices on Saturday from 12:30-2pm and also Sunday from 12:30-2pm.  During the regular season (i.e., all days after March 7th), our practice day/time switches to just Sunday from 12:30-2pm 11:00am-12:30pm.  Similar to our games, all practices will be at the Willie Mays baseball diamond at Holbrook Palmer Park.  Thus, during the preseason (about a 4 week period), we’ll have 2 practices per week and during the regular season we’ll only have 1 practice per week (given that we’ll have 2 games each week as well).  I also have a batting cage at my house, so I will be able to host hitting clinics on off days, when kids are available and interested in additional time at the plate.

Thank you,

Welcome to the Yard Goats!
by posted 01/28/2020

Welcome to the Yard Goats!
Parents,

We’re finally ready to kick off the 2020 Menlo Atherton Little League Minors Season!!  We just finished the Minors draft this evening and as the title of the email suggests, your son or daughter was selected to join our squad, the Yard Goats.  For those who don’t know me, my name is Tony Arata and my son, August, is on the team and I’ll be serving as Head Coach/Manager.   I am also a member of the M-A Little League Board and Commissioner of Fall Ball, as well as Umpire Coordinator for the league.  I’ve been coaching in the M-A Little League for 5 years and will also be Managing my younger sons team in the Machine Pitch Division.  I played in the M-A Little League as a child with my dad as a coach, and have very fond memories of my time on the diamond and it’s great to be back in a coaching capacity.  I’ve had the pleasure of coaching a number of the children on our team in prior baseball seasons and I’m looking forward to meeting and coaching those who I have not yet worked with.  I wanted to send this initial team email to touch base and provide a few initial details and information regarding the upcoming season.

First off, and most importantly, here is our team roster:

  • August Arata
  • Fiona Foley
  • Nolan Pine
  • Jordan Benkis
  • Bobby Telles
  • Ethan Arguello
  • Fin Curtis
  • Lucas Waxman
  • Lukas Coleman
  • Teague McLennan
  • Tomas Jaramillo-Lopez

Hopefully each of you will recognize some names on the list, but even if not, we’ll make sure all the children feel right at home on the Yard Dogs!

Game Info:

I wanted to touch base generally on game/practice times and locations and the start of the season.  The regular season game schedule will be uploaded to our team page on the M-ALL website at www.m-all.org.  Our team page can be found at:  https://www.leagueathletics.com/Bulletins.asp?org=m%2Dall%2Eorg.   The regular season kicks off on March 7th with our wonderful Opening Day Ceremony.  We will generally have 2 games per week, with one game on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and a second game on Saturday.  Most games will be at Willie Mays Field at Holbrook Palmer Park, and we will also be using the diamond at Willow Oaks as needed.

Practice Info:

As for practices, we have two different periods of time for our slotted practice days/times.  During the pre-season (i.e., all days before Saturday, March 7th), we will have scheduled practices on Saturday from 12:30-2pm and also Sunday from 12:30-2pm.  During the regular season (i.e., all days after March 7th), our practice day/time switches to just Sunday from 12:30-2pm.

As much as I would like to get started this weekend, there are several player and coaching conflicts as club and school basketball leagues wind down, and Sunday is going to be tough due to the Super Bowl (GO NINERS!!!). Due to these conflicts, our first team practice will be on Saturday, the 8th of February.

If for any reason the practice schedule is overly problematic, please let me know ASAP and, as a general matter, if your child cannot make any particular game/practice, please do let me know so that I can be aware of that in advance.  You can go on our team web page to indicate for any game/practice whether your son plans to come or not and we ask that you try to do that as much as possible as it is tremendously helpful for us to know of game/practice absences well in advance for planning and lineup purposes.

Coach Information:

In addition to myself, the coaching duties will be handled by assistant coaches Matt Foley, Brian Coleman, Alan Waxman and Jay Benkis.  With such a great, seasoned coaching staff, we are going to be able to offer quite a bit of individualized instruction to the kids.  If anyone else would like to serve as an assistant coach or just help out a practices, please let me know.  The more coaches we have, the the better experience we can provide to the players.

Parent Volunteer Roles:

Other important volunteer jobs for parents are: Team Parent (who would help organize snacks, volunteer duties, team photographer, assistance with team website, etc.) PCA Parent (Positive Coaching Alliance, keeps order on the field and ensures a safe and positive experience for players), Statistician (keeps track of pitch count, batting success and fielding arrangement) and Field Crew (set up the field when we are home team, clean up afterwards when we are visiting team). I would love to fill these important jobs as soon as possible, so if you are interested in any of these jobs or if you already signed up for them when registering, please let me know!

Team and Parent Meeting:

I will plan to hold a full team meeting (including parents) right after our first practice on Saturday the 8th, so please stick around after that practice for 10-15 minutes.  The coaches will introduce themselves and I’ll give a run down on our expectations/plan for the season, talk about player equipment, discuss tips for parents throughout the season and league rules as well as give you all a chance to ask questions.

Equipment:

A quick word about equipment:  We will hand out our team uniforms as soon as we get them in, which will include 1 jersey, 1 hat, 1 pair of baseball socks and 1 belt.  Please note that you will be required to purchase baseball pants for your player, as the league does not provide these.  We ask that you please purchase WHITE colored pants, which you can pick up at Goetz Brothers, Big 5 or other sporting goods stores.  You will also need to provide cleats and baseball glove for your player, but bats, balls and other equipment are not necessary (but note that if your player does bring them to practice, they will be responsible for keeping track of this personal gear).  Catchers gear is also provided by the league.   All players are also required to wear an athletic cup.

Safety:

Please also let me know if your child has any particular health concerns that we coaches should be aware of in advance (e.g., allergies, asthma, etc.).

Team Communications:

As I mentioned above, our official league-sponsored team page can be found at the M-ALL website.  We have a team-specific page that is a great place to get details re: the game/practice schedule, the full roster of players (plus parent contact information), better details re: league rules, etc.  There is also an app that you can download to link to our website off of your phones which is also available at the website.  You will also receive emails from me as I update the team page and add bulletins and other important information.  Again, our page can be found at:  https://www.leagueathletics.com/Bulletins.asp?org=m%2Dall%2Eorg

Expectations for the season:

I just wanted to let you know about what to expect for this season in terms of coaching focus and player development.  At this now more developed stage in their baseball lives, while we will continue to focus on perfecting the baseball “basics” for each child, more will be expected of them in terms of focus, preparation and hard work (both at practice and outside our games/practices).  The introduction of “live kid pitching” this year to our younger team members adds a new and difficult, but exciting and challenging element for the kids, but it is one we will prepare them well for and get them comfortable with.  Lots of new things to learn and get better at and become more “advanced” ballplayers.  Obviously our primary goal is to make playing baseball the most fun athletic experience they’ll have all year, but we’ll do so by teaching the kids more and expecting more from them as teammates and ballplayers.  Individualized instruction will give us a chance to make sure the kids receive “right sized” coaching.  Should you have any questions or concerns as we start the season (or during the season), please feel free to contact me or any of the other coaches any time.

Thanks to you all in advance for a great season!  We’re going have a blast!

GO YARD GOATS!

Best,

Coach Tony
