Challenger League Game at Lincoln Glen Little League - Apr 2010
Menlo-Atherton Little League is proud to continue sponsoring a Challenger Team as part of our Little League program for the 2010 baseball season. The Challenger Division is a Little League International program for mentally and physically challenged youth that offers them the benefits of Little League participation in an environment structured to their abilities:
-
There will be one M-A team of 15 players. To be eligible, they must be 6-18 years of age.
-
"Buddies" will accompany the players on the field and at bat, if necessary.
-
Based on their ability, players bat one of three ways: hitting off a T; having a coach pitch; or, having another player pitch.
-
Two innings are played, everyone bats, and everyone fields. No outs are recorded and no score is kept.
-
All the players get uniforms and participate in Opening Day along with our other Little League divisions.
Foster City has been running its Challenger division for 10 years and reports that it is an extremely popular program. In fact, 4 players have been in the program for the entire 10 years! Overall, they cite the outdoor activity and opportunity to socialize as the biggest benefits for their players.
Palo Alto also offers a program and is thrilled with the results. A story from Palo Alto Weekly offers a great inside view of the experience (see link below):

We are expecting that the Challenger team will play approximately 10 Sunday games during the spring. They will play in a league with 9 other teams from nearby towns.
